But as far as its plot goes it's about as shallow as any fevered dream nonsensical pseudo-art film out there which is so open to interpretation that everyone comes to a different conclusion about it. That characteristic is the opposite of a good movie. A truly intellectual movie has many elements that mesh together and flow, requiring the audience to think in order to get it. Not in throwing out half-assed metaphors and allegories which may or may not be one of fifty possible things and not tying it up at the end because the creators had written themselves into a metaphorical corner. Heard a lot of buzz about The Lobster. Never got around to it, not yet anyway. I've had my eyes on Barry Keoghan since Dunkirk. He puts on a daunting performance here, pretty damn impressive. Colin Farrell, Kidman, the whole cast, really made this work and fit the stark mood of the whole film and world. I enjoyed the clever camera work and cinematography. The Overhead tracking shots, along with the slow zoom transitions work well and set up this dreadful mood of this cold, bleak world. I really can't even begin to praise the shots this film had or this review would be pretty lengthy. The posters are expressive and great as well.
Atmospheric music, I loved the dimmed lighting and lamps going out as soon as Steven gets the call from Martin half way through in his bedroom. Sets the mood for Martin. Unsettling as hell. What a bizarre tale, but I enjoyed it. I feel like he was some kind of symbolization to Steven, a guilt trip. We went deep in some dialogue here and there and I was entertained by that. The whole scene with Martin, his mother and Steven in Martin's house made me pretty anxious. Knowing Steven is responsible, for the most part, Martin's dad dying elevated the uncomfortable feeling for me. And how mysterious the Martin character is, now meeting his mother, just rubbed me the wrong way. The dialogue along with the mood of that setting - asking to watch that particular movie, and knowing Steven is such a busy well-respected surgeon who is also a father and is trying to figure things out, set me up to squirm like an excited puppy. Steven is backed against the wall until he finally has to sway himself to believe Martin is actually causing this and told the truth in their little cafe way this film uses silence to build a scene is great. I felt a certain classical feel the way some characters interacted in the first half. So Martin saves his fries for last huh? I noticed in the ending scene Steven's daughter eats her fries first with the burger sitting untouched, a cryptic ending. Steven does not turn around to look at Martin while leaving the can look at Martin two ways possibly, it could be Steven dealing with the guilt and it coming back to haunt him with only him going insane, or he was physically real.
